REGULATION

  1. The goal is to design a comfortable bar stool, stable, robust and with a seat height of 75 cm , suitable for a bar counter of about 110/120 cm.
  2. The material in use is a standard panel of birch plywood the size of 1220×2440 mm and 18 mm thickness. The cutting/milling will be performed by the “Miocugino” team and its CNC machine in its laboratory.
  3. Entrants should consider how many stools they can nest on one standard sheet  – So the stool could be sold as a set cut from 1 sheet in the future.
  4. One of the main focus is optimizing the usage of the given wood panels, so priority will be given to projects that will produce the least possible waste, and creating the highest number of stools from the given surface
  5. A nested sheet showing the stool nested multiple times should be submitted with the entry.
  6. In addition to cutting, etching of the wood is also allowed (specify the depth in the technical drawings), as well as three-dimensional work (as long as they are within 18 mm of the panel thickness).
  7. Projects that use interlocking elements or wooden inserts will be favorised.
  8. Glue and wooden dowels are allowed, Metal hardware is not.
  9. Entrants should also consider the making process – Try to keep it simple and easy to make. Projects that require less human intervention or post-production, so to say that are ready to be assembled just “out of the machine” and that could be immediately packed and shipped (occupying as less space as possible), will be the projects that have successfully realized the goal.
  10. The projects must be original: they must not be already in production by other companies, or have already been submitted to other competitions.
  11. The ideas can be submitted in a format of your choice (pdf, jpeg, viedo, etc ..), but the technical drawings should follow the guidelines of Opendesk template (download it HERE).

TIPS FOR PROPER PREPARATION OF THE DRAWINGS FOR CUTTING WITH THE CNC MILLING MACHINE:

  1. The distance between the components must be minimum of 15 mm, to allow the passage of the drill.
  2. Unlike laser or waterjet cutting, the drill is a cylindrical object that has a diameter, therefore it can not create sharp closed angles under 180 degrees with radius equal to 0, so keep in mind that all the internal angles will have a radius of at least 4mm.
  3. Bear in mind cost efficiency of a cnc milling machine! More cutting = more time = more cost!
  4. Indicate clearly on the drawings which are the parts in use and which are the ones that are gonna be discarded (ie it must be clear whether the cutter should cut inside or outside the drawn profile).
  5. Do not do too thin parts, they can easily shatter during milling (i.e. no less than 10mm )
